Audemars Piguet

Audemars Piguet is definitely regarded as a top tier watch manufacturer. It is one of the oldest and most established Swiss watchmakers, the company was a partnership between Jules Audemars and Edward Piguet officially formed in 1889. They focused on only high-quality, complex ultra-precise watches. To this day, Audemars Piguet is the oldest watch manufacturer still owned by it’s founding family.

 

 

Baume & Mercier

Baume & Mercier's foundation was laid in 1830 in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland. It rose to prominence in the 1980s under the ownership of the Piaget Family. Notably the first American distributors were the Kaiser and Schwartz families who were survivors of Auschwitz. The brand was acquired in 1993 by Luxury Giant Richemont who also owns Cartier, Mont Blanc, Vacheron Constantin and Piaget. It continues to flourish under this new direction.

 

 

Bell & Ross

Bell & Ross was born in 1992 by a team of designers and specialists of aircraft and space controls joined together to create watches perfectly suiting a professional use. Nowadays astronauts, pilots, divers and bomb disposal experts us Bell & Ross watches as tools for their missions. The brand has captured a rapidly growing marketplace with male watch afficionados who admire it's masculine, military like appearance.

 

 

Blancpain

Blancpain was founded in 1735 by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain. In 1926 it was the first company to bring to the french market an automatic watch. After a 50 year halt, Blancpain is revitalized by JC Biver and Jacques Piguet. They produced split second chronographs, tourbillons and repeaters. The Swatch Group purchased Blancpain in 2000. To this day, Blancpain produces less than 10,000 pcs per year. The factory is right next to the famous movement maker Frederic Piguet. Therefore, it can be said that Blancpain features an in-house movement. It should also be pointed out that Blancpain does not use an assembly line production rather each watchmaker assembles a watch from start to finish.

 

 

Breguet

In 1775, A.L. Breguet founded his company and soon became an official supplier to the French Royal family. He invents the first self-winding watch, first repeater, and first tourbillon. He utilized moon phase perpetual calendars, and with the help of Napoleon, he invented the hinged “half-hunter”. The company was resurrected in the 1980s by the owners of the Parisian Jewelers Chaumet. They later sold the company and after changing hands again the company was purchased by the Swatch Group. Today the company is overseen by Nicholas Hayek the Chairman of the Board of Swatch Group. The company is producing Tourbillons in volume and the future is extremely bright.

 

 

Breitling

Breitling was founded in 1884 by Leon Breitling in St. Imier, Switzerland. His specialty from the start was the production of Chronographs. In 1936, most airplanes were fitted with Breitling chronographs. In the mid 90's, Breitling launched the life-saving "Emergency" model that could trigger a rescue anywhere in the world. Most recently, the partnership with Bently has really catipulted the company to great heights.

 

 

Cartier

The history of Cartier is fantastic, as it invented many styles of watches that are still produced today. Founded in 1847 by Louis-Franois Cartier, this company was originally a jewelry boutique. The first wrist watch made by Cartier was called the Santos Dumont named after the Brazilian Aviator in 1904. 2 years later, Cartier began experimenting with jewel – encrusted watches. 1917 saw the introduction of the famous Cartier Tank watch. Long regarded as the single most important and influential watch design of the 20th century, the distinctive timepiece was designed in tribute to the Allied Tank commanders who helped defend France during World War I. Today its watches are Swiss-made with French high style.

 

 

Chopard

Founded in 1860 by Louis Ulysse Chopard, this company soon acquired an excellent reputation for its precision watches. The Chopard watches were so precise, that they became one of the main suppliers to the Swiss railway - known for their punctuality. Just about a century into its legacy, Chopard was purchased by jewelry entrepreneur Karl Scheufele in 1963. In 1976, Chopard unveiled the now-famed Happy Diamonds collection to the world.

 

 

Chronoswiss

Founded by Gerd-R. Lang in Munich Germany in 1985 Chronoswiss has become an icon of Superior watch manufacturing that truly rivals the elite swiss brands. Chronoswiss has a unique appearance with traditional hand craftmanship and modern innovation. Every year Chronoswiss debuts something new and innovative in horology. The brand has attracted collectors and afficianados throughtout the world.

 

 

Roger Dubuis

Roger Dubuis is one of the youngest companies to achieve top tier status. It was formed in 1995 as a partnership between Roger Dubuis and Carlos Diaz. All pieces are limited to just 28 examples. This has directly led to it's success as collectors clamore just for the right to purchase certain models.

 

 

Gerald Genta

Gerald Genta -the man- founded Gerald Genta-the company- in the the late 1980's however, his profound influence on the World of Horology was felt long before that time. Known as one of the most creative watch designers of our time, Gerald Genta is responsible for the exceptional timeless creation of the extremely sought after Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, The Nautillus for Patek Phillip, the IWC Ingenieur, the Omega Constellation & Seamaster and Bulgari Bulgari. Gerald Genta played a major role in the late 1980's by reintroducing the watch world to the magnificence of Mechanical Luxury Watches.

 

 

Girard-Perregaux

Girard-Perregaux was founded in 1856 when Constantin Girard married Marie Perregaux. Soon after, the company really made a name for itself when it unveiled at the Paris Universal Exhibition the masterpiece, "Tourbillon Sous Trois Ponts d'Or" (translation: Tourbillon with Three Gold Bridges). 150 years later, Girard-Perregaux is still intact. The brand has taken off since 1992 when Italian entrpreneur, architect and former racing driver Luigi Macaluso took over the reins of GP. Today it enjoys the status and reputation and acceptance as one of Switzerland's elite watch manufacturing companies in the same company with Jaeger LeCoultre and Ulysses Nardin.

 

 

Glashutte Original

Glashutte was founded in 1845. However, the East German government consolidated it in 1951. Following the German reunification in 1990, Glashutte reestablished itself. In the year 2000, The Swatch Group purchased Glashutte and has attempted to utilize its company’s traditions. Glashutte only makes timepieces in limited editions and are all mechanical masterpieces.

 

 

Hublot

Carlo Crocco grew up in a family of watchmakers in Italy and in 1980 defied convention by creating a solid gold Hublot fitted with the first black strap in natural rubber and a sensation was born. The brand has many successes in the 1980s but when watch industry genius Jean Claude Biver joined the firm in 2004 a phenomena was born. The Big Bang series of watches have become one of the hottest watches in the world and demand so far outstrips supply that numerous models sell at a premium above retail when they can be found at all.

 

 

IWC

Originally, IWC was an American company producing watches in Switzerland for the US market. In 1868, the company moved to Schaffhausen, Switzerland. IWC really made a name for itself in World War II by making intricate Pilot’s Watches. IWC has long been regarded amongst the finest Swiss manufacturers of watches and they have continued to produce spectacular complicated pieces to maintain and expand their reputation. Minute repeaters, Perpetual Calendars and the Grand Complication are amongst the most admired pieces made. In 2000 IWC was purchased by Luxury giant Richemont (Cartier, Baume & Mercier, Le Coultre, Piaget, Mt. Blanc and Vacheron Constantin) and the new management is enjoying significant growth.

 

 

Jaeger-LeCoultre

The history of Jaeger LeCoultre goes back over 150 years ago. Jacques LeCoultre was a leading supplier of watch parts and movements to many of the biggest Swiss Watchmakers such as Vacheron, Audemars, IWC, and Patek. When LeCoultre joined forces with Edmund Jaeger, the company went a whole new direction. They introduced their own line of watches – manufactured completely in-house. And to this day, Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the few companies in Switzerland that still produces its own movements, cases, dials, hands, and bracelets. Virtually every single component in a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch is hand-finished, produced in-house. In 2000 Richemont (Cartier, Baume & Mercier, Piaget, IWC and Mt. Blanc) acquired Jaeger-LeCoultre.

 

 

Jaquet-Droz

Jacquet Droz (1721-17900)was the creator of watches, clock and automatons that were greatly admired for their finess and complexity and known in the various royal courts of Europe. By 1784 Jacquet Droz had manufacturing works in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, London and Geneva. The Jacquet Droz of today is a tribute to the history of this famous maker and adopts his name. Jacquet Droz is part of the Swiss Watch Giant Swatch Group (Omega, Longines, Tissot, Blancpain, Breguet, Glashutte Original).

 

 

A. Lange Sohne

In 1845 Adolph Lange founded his watch workshop in Glashutte, Germany. 100 years later, the A. Lange & Sohne factory was destroyed during a World War II bombing raid. After the German reunification of 1990, his great grandson, Walter Lange decided to bring back the family legacy. 15 years later, Lange has created the technical firsts such as the first watch with a fusee and chain transmission, a tourbillon, and a rattrapante chronograph combined in one movement.

 

 

Montblanc

The modern day Montblanc brand sprung from the Simplo Filler Pen Company founded in Hamburg, Germany in 1906. From the start, the company was an interesting marriage of the various skills and expertise of a stationer, Claus Johannes Voss; a banker, Christian Lausen; and an engineer, Wilhelm Dziambor. By 1909, it became clear that the ambitions of these 3 men for their brand spread far beyond their base in Hamburg, Germany. In this short time they already established boutiques for their products in Paris, London and Barcelona.
One year later marked the first of many bold marketing initiatives for the brand. Simplo Filler officially became "Montblanc", named aptly for the tallest mountain in Europe to symbolize the high aspirations that the founders had for the brand and the high level of quality that they built into it.

 

 

Franck Muller

Ulysse Nardin

Ulysse Nardin established his company in 1846. 30 years later, his son, Paul-David, took over and continued his fathers excellence. Ulysse Nardin specialized in mechanical marine chronometers. For the next 50 years, they won so many awards and certificates the company the company's legacy was guaranteed. The company was sold in 1983. In 1996, the company celebrated it's 150th anniversary with the release of the 1846 Chronometer. Many other incredible watches soon came including the "Freak" and the "Sonata".

 

 

Omega

Omega was founded in 1848. In 1931 it gained international fame when it was choosen to be the official time-keeper of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In 1969 it really becomes famous as it becomes known as the "Speedmaster" is the first watch worn on the moon. Since then, through it's many affiliations with sports stars (Anna Kournikova, Ernie Els, Michael Schumaker) celebrities (Cindy Crawford) and cultural icons (James Bond), Omega has continued to be one of the most popular brands in the world.

Panerai

Panerai is the most famous Italian watch company. But keep in mind, Panerai is now produced in Switzerland, not Italy. Originally founded in Florence in the 1860’s, this “watch workshop” was commissioned by the Italian Navy to produce a watch that could be easily read underwater. This early prototype was actually fitted with Rolex parts. Currently Panerai produces a very limited number of pieces and therefore keeps demand high.

 

 

Parmigiani-Fleurier

Michel Parmigianiwas born in Couvet Switzerland in 1950 and from an early age was fascinated by the field of watchmaking. After training he devoted himself to the restoration of renowned creations in private collections and museums. In 1987, with the support of the Sandoz Family Foundation Parmigiani Fleurier was founded. A leader in Haute Horology and today a true manufacture the brand has evolved new approaches to the challenges of producing watches that positioned the brand and it�s products amongst the greatest. Today all components are conceived, developed, machined, decorated and cased at Parmigiani Fleurier. Today the brand is a leader at the pinnacle of horological refinement and innovation and Michel Parmigiani is recognized as one of the living masters of the art and science of watchmaking.

 

 

Patek Philippe

Patek Philippe was established in 1851 between Antoine Patek and Jean A Philippe. This duo layed the foundation which allowed Patek Philippe to dominate the Swiss watch industry for over 150 years. In 1863 they invented the "free mainspring" that lead to the invention of the automatic watch. In 1889 they invent a special "Perpetual Calendar" which for the first time, keeps track of how many days in each month and knows when it's leap year. The split second chronograph is patented by Patek in 1902. 30 years later, the last family members seek out caretakers to direct the company and sell the firm to the Stern family who still own the brand today. The Stern family have been conscientious protectors of the virtues that make Patek Philippe the best and the status and regard of the world of connoisseurs and collectors has never been higher. Fifty of the fifty-three highest prices ever paid for watches at auction were Patek Phillipe.

 

 

Piaget

Piaget was founded in 1874 in La-Cotes-aux-Fees Switzerland. The first workshop was on Georges Piaget family's farm. Within the first 100 years the name became synonomous with glamour and luxury and spectacular style. Always known for it's haute joaillier watches it was 1979 that Piaget would launch it's most famous product the "Piaget Polo". The product became a sensation and the fame of Piaget grew exponentially. In 1988 Piaget was acquired by the Luxury holding company that was to become Richemont. 1996 saw the release of "The Dancer" and in 2001 a new version of the "Polo". Yves Piaget still is the face of the brand and it's world ambassador.

 

 

Rolex

Rolex is easily the most famous high-end watch line in the world. It is also the most recognizable and arguably one of the most durable watches in existence. The begginings of the company can be traced to 1905 when Hans Wilsdorf and W Davis established their watch company called Wilsdorf and Davis. 3 years later the name was changed to Rolex. At this time, pocket watches were more popular than wristwatches but Rolex had a vision, and that vision was that one day wristwatches would far surpass pocketwatches in popularity. They were right. Through the years Rolex is credited with building the first truly water proof watch called the "Oyster". The first watch with an automatic date called the "Datejust". And the first diving watch resistant to 100 meters called the "Submariner".

 

 

F.P. Journe

Francois-Paul Journe graduated from Watchmaking school in Paris in 1976 and began a career that is today at the pinnacle of watchmaking. His inventions and innovations are the work of creativity and mastery and he has earned numerous awards for his breakthrough inventions of complicated mechanisms. A true manufacturer (producing virtually all of the watch components and based on movements exclusively his creation) his brand has grown to great prominence in less than 20 years.

 

 

Richard Mille

Richard Mille timepieces offer a very different conceptual approach in the luxury watch field. It is Mille’s goal to be to the watch industry what Ferrari and Mc Laren are to the automotive field—technologically advanced, innovative and performance oriented. Indeed, the image of Mille is anything but typical. The timepieces produced by this brand are the results of a very talented team of engineers working in an ultra-modern production workshop to serve as strong 21st century concept.

 

The Richard Mille watch is an object of relentless reliability and bold difference. All of the components have been manufactured from scratch and many are totally integrated. Every detail of the Richard Mille watches have been the subject of extreme scrutiny. Each movement contains 267 components—the production of which require more than 20,000 mechanical operations. Vacheron Constantin

Vacheron Constantin is officially the oldest watch company in Switzerland as it was established in 1755. It was simply called Vacheron untill 1814 when a third generation Vacheron took in a partner by the name of F Constantin to invest and take over the international marketing and sales for the company. From then on Vacheron and Constantin has strived to create only the finest, most complicated and beautiful timepieces in the world. In the 1980s Vacheron Constantin was purchased by the former Saudi Arabian OPEC minister Sheikh Yamani who sold it in 1996 to the Richemont Group (Cartier, Piaget, Baume & Mercier, Jaeger LeCountre and IWC. Vacheron remains the smallest of the super elite brands (Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Breguet et al) although they are flourishing under new management.

Maurice LaCroix

In 1961, Zurich-based Desco von Schulthess AG acquired an assembly facility in Saignelégier, a town in the Canton of Jura, where it produced private label watches for the national and international market. In 1975, the company introduced its first watch under the name of Maurice Lacroix. In the fall of 2001, Maurice Lacroix S.A., previously a division of Desco von Schulthess AG, became an independent company. Today, Maurice Lacroix is one of the most successful Swiss watch brands, both nationally and internationally, and is represented in 45 countries all over the world. The company is one of the few independent Swiss watch manufacturers. Over the years, Maurice Lacroix has made significant investments continuously to keep the technology up-to-date. The assembly facility - together with the training and information centre opened in 2001 and the extension completed in January 2002 - is currently one of the most modern in the industry. The company thus put itself in an ideal position to use these state-of-the-art ateliers to design and put together its watches with a great deal of passion and precision. In spite of the rapid change and growth, one thing has always remained the same - the company's love of design, perfection, and fine materials. Zenith

Zenith was officially born in 1865. Through the 1900''s, Zenith is a leader in innovation garnering many awards. It's most famous movement, "The El Primero" comes to market in 1969. Until 1996 Rolex used the "El Primero" movement in the Daytona models. In 1999 the company is bought by Luxury Giant LVMH (Louis Vuitton, Moet, Hennesy).
